デザインの書き方の話なのですが、日本ではほとんどのクラフターがまずトレーシングフィルムにデザインを書きます、この時にいろいろ書き直しながら納得のいくデザインを完成させていきます。自分もこの方法をとっていますが正直時間がかかる作業の一つであります。
特に大きな面積を埋めるような場合はかなり気合を入れないとデザインが書けません、いままで苦労して来ました。
それとは違ってアメリカの職人に見られる方法がいきなり革にデザインを書いてしまうという方法です。この場合は微調整は出来ますが大きなデザインの変更は不可能になります、しかしトレースフィルムに時間を掛けてデザインを書いて、それを革に写す為にまたなぞってという作業がなくなります。もしこの革に直にデザインを書くことを覚えてしまえば作業効率は格段にアップすることになります。
と言うことで今時間を見つけては直書きの練習をしています！
夢中で作業していたので写真を撮り忘れてすでにカット後ですが革に基準になる円を書き左にある花型のジグを叩いてハンコのように革に写します、そこからは軽く革に下書きをしながらどんどんカットしていきます。まだ慣れていないので少々時間をかけて埋め方を考えたりしましたがやはりフィルムに書くより断然早いですね。
とりあえずま～ま～の出来かな、、、、。
これは絶対にマスターしないといけないんです、なぜなら馬の鞍を作ろうとしているからです！
今はそのことで頭がいっぱいです。

It’s so cold…
In Japan, almost all leather crafters use tracing paper to draw their designs onto the leather (before carving). With this method you can fix the design over and over until you get it right. I also use this method for my leather work but the one bad thing about it is that it takes up a lot of time. Designs for big spaces especially require a lot of focus and time.
In America, leather carvers usually don’t use tracing papers to draw their designs onto the leather. Instead, they create their design as they carve, which does not allow them to fix little mistakes but lets them change the overall design because the design is created as the artist cuts.
This saves the craftsman, or artist, a lot of time.
I am now practicing this method. First, I drew circles onto the leather and then drew connecting stems. I then used a flower cutout to position the flowers in the design as a stamp. I cut and carved into the leather after these steps.
I just started so it took me a while to do this. However, I think it came out alright but I still have a lot of practicing to do. I have to master this method in order to become a master craftsman, especially because I want to make saddles!
Most of my time now is devoted to developing these skills.
